Symposium – Dealing with Intimate Partner Violence Offenders, Improving the System by Questioning It, Agen, 09th and 10th of October 2024

The 9th and 10th of October 2024, ÉNAP has organised its 7th international research days in the penitentiary environment, themed on dealing with intimate partner violence offenders.

Since 2019, French penal policy has made intimate partner violence one of its priorities because, amongst other things, repressive measures applied to this day against this type of violence have proven inefficient. With these settings, and in order to modernise our policy on the matter, it was essential to collectively integrate and reflect to this phenomenon’s complexity.

More specifically, the purpose of this event was to focus on innovative practices for supporting perpetrators of intimate partner violence, and exchange over their challenges and multiple implications. These two research days have provided the opportunity to gather about forty researchers, practitioners and decision-makers from France, Europe and beyond to discuss the diversity of approaches, their philosophies and the practices that underpin them. This symposium has also permitted to better understand the effects of these practices on the political, social and individual level.

The symposium was structured in three themes:

1. the question of gender in the understanding of the phenomenon and in intervention practices

2. questioning the “accountability” while dealing with offenders of intimate partner violence

3. the question of the social reintegration of men convicted for intimate partner violence. Read Conference Proceedings (coming soon)

Interpreted in French, English and Spanish, this symposium was recorded. You are more than welcome to view, or review, the interventions:
